This is a short story cycle consisting of several vignettes or short stories about the south side of Chicago and the people who live there.

The stories are all told in first person narrative and do not chronicle the life of any.one.character.in.particular.but highlights a variety of different people and places.

 

 

 

 

Micro Braids & Kinky Twists

This is the last time I’m letting them Africans braid my hair. I don’t know.why.I.continue.to.put.myself through this much pain. I got one African pulling my hair from the right side, one African pulling my hair from the left side, and then they got the nerve to call another African over and tell her to start working on the back of my head.

Dana 

I watched their family from behind my desk, just like I did every night. I thought it was an honor to work at the University of Chicago Hospital. I got to meet a lot of nice people, especially nice rich people. At home they said that all rich people are mean but I’ve met some really nice ones working here. A couple times I came across some that weren’t that nice but for the most part, most of the patients and their families have been really nice to me.

Like this family.

I think out of all the families I’ve met so far, I like these people the most, especially the daughter, Dana.
